Allwyn appoints industry newcomer as chief security officer

Mark Hughes to manage information security, game platform security and physical security in his new role as operator continues to build out top team  

Allwyn has appointed former Vodafone exec Mark Hughes as its new chief security officer ahead of taking on the fourth National Lottery licence.

Hughes will join the operator on 15 January ahead of 1 February when the firm in due to begin its tenure as the licence holder.

Hughes’ main focus will be to lead all areas of security for The National Lottery, with his role including oversight for information security, game platform security and physical security. 

He will join Allwyn after a stint as chief information officer at Smart DCC, the firm responsible for the communication network supporting the rollout of smart energy meters across the UK. 

Before that, Hughes spent 16 years at Vodafone in several roles, including a 12-year tenure as the telecommunications company’s chief corporate security officer across its UK business. 

In his time at Vodafone, Hughes led the firm’s corporate security operations and security compliance programme, and he worked closely with British intelligence agencies and the government to implement security controls and best practices to ensure that Vodafone met its obligations as a provider of the Critical National Infrastructure. 

On his new role, Hughes said: “I’m thrilled to be joining Allwyn and being part of the next chapter in the journey of the National Lottery.
