GeoComply has reported Super Bowl LVIII saw a 22.3% year-on-year (YoY) increase in geolocation checks over the course of the weekend.

As online sports betting continues to grow in the US, especially around the NFL’s showpiece event held in Las Vegas this year and won by the Kansas City Chiefs, GeoComply has confirmed a significant spike in activity.

The data comes from US sportsbook customers across 28 US states, Washington DC and Puerto Rico, as well as recent additions such as Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont.

Other highlights include a 15% increase YoY in active accounts across states where online sports betting is legal, from 7.4 million to 8.5 million.

The cybersecurity firm added that prior to kick-off, there were 14,750 transactions per second, nearly double the figure from last year’s Super Bowl.

In the build-up to the game, GeoComply noted 1.8 million new users signed up for legal online betting accounts, as per GeoComply tracking.

Anna Sainsbury, GeoComply CEO and co-founder, said the continued growth is good for the regulated market in the ongoing battle against illegal gambling.

Sainsbury said: “The continued transition to the legal market set the stage for a historic first Super Bowl in Las Vegas, and the record breaking results we saw did not disappoint.

“We are proud to help foster the growth of a regulated industry that puts accountability, security and player protection at the forefront.

“Compliance drives our mission and, with that commitment, we strive to help our customers reliably and responsibly expand the player funnel and boost their businesses.

“Every year the legal market grows is good news for consumers and states, and bad news for illegal offshore sportsbooks that become marginalised.”
