Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has hired former KPMG head Adam Rivers as managing director to lead the company’s new betting and gaming sector team.

Rivers joins A&M’s EMEA travel, hospitality and leisure (THL) practice from KPMG, where he has worked across a series of roles since April 2011.

As head of KPMG’s gambling sector consultancy arm, Rivers’ work covered M&A and commercial due diligence, algorithmic design, fiscal affairs and other broader regulatory issues.

He will be joined at A&M by a further three new recruits, including two directors and a senior associate, all of which have made the switch from KPMG.

Séamus McGowan joins as a director after more than 12 years consulting on betting and gaming with KPMG.

Another new addition is Charlie Leach who joins as a director, having spent most of his career advising in the betting and gaming field.

James Bentley completes the KPMG exodus, joining A&M as a senior associate.

Ed Bignold, MD and head of A&M’s THL practice, said: “Adam’s arrival could not be more timely. The betting and gaming industry is growing at pace, and clients from operators to regulators require advice to react to and make the most of the opportunity.

“With his wealth of experience and extensive knowledge of the market, Adam is well-equipped to build on our work to date and grow our offer across the world.

“As A&M’s THL practice continues its expansion, we are uniquely positioned to offer our clients a global perspective and entrepreneurial approach to help address their needs.”

Rivers said: “As the gambling industry undergoes rapid evolution, our clients are grappling with a myriad of challenges, including regulatory shifts, technological advancements and changing consumer behaviour.

“It’s crucial for companies in the sector to adapt to these changes, to help maintain their performance and position themselves for long-term success and profitability.

“I’m delighted to be spearheading A&M’s betting and gaming offer from the London office. The firm’s unique global platform, which is independent and free of certain conflicts, will enable us to continue developing our market-leading practice.”
