Flutter Entertainment’s UK and Ireland division has donated £400,000 to grassroots sports clubs as part of the operator’s Cash4Clubs program.

The international gambling giant has awarded charitable donations of £2,000 each to 200 sporting clubs up and down the country that participate in typically underfunded sports.

For the 2024 initiative, Flutter put a particular emphasis on clubs based in impoverished areas and those attempting to reach out to under-represented communities.

Clubs and charities were encouraged to apply for the financial lifeline in order to upgrade their facilities, purchase much-needed new equipment, help fund coaching or simply to invest in the sustainability of their respective operations.

The UK&I division had originally pledged £200,000 for the 2023-2024 Cash4Clubs awards but, after receiving 1,282 applications, opted to double the fund.

Clubs set to benefit from the donation include the Team Solent wheelchair rugby club, Taibach Tigers Rounders Club in Wales and the Northern Powerhouse Boxing Academy in Yorkshire.

The timely grants come only months after the culture secretary Lucy Frazer launched the UK government’s ‘Get Active’ campaign to boost sports participation among the disadvantaged.

The Department for Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) wants to see at least 2.5 million more adults and one million more children classed as “physically active” in England by 2030.

Flutter UK&I CEO Ian Brown said: “Community clubs are the bedrock of sport in the UK and we are committed to doing everything we can to help small clubs make a real difference to people’s lives.

“I’m delighted we were able to double the size of this year’s Cash4Clubs fund to £400,000 after seeing a record number of applications come in. We are convinced Cash4Clubs will have a real impact in those areas that need it most.”

Cash4Clubs was first launched in 2008 and since then has gone on to raise close to £5m. These funds have been invested by Flutter into community sports nationwide through its brands.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, Flutter rebranded the programme to ‘Clubs in Crisis’ before donating over £4m in business rates relief to help struggling organisations stay afloat.
