The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) reported 56 instances of suspicious betting activity across six sports during Q1 2024.

The watchdog revealed football produced the highest number of alerts with 24, equating to 43% of total alerts.

Tennis was the second-most flagged sport, with 14 alerts, while basketball had nine alerts.

Esports was in fourth place with six alerts, but the country of origin was not allocated as the association said it was unclear where the event was hosted.

Table tennis registered two alerts, while cricket accounted for the remaining suspicious betting alert.

The Q1 total of 56 alerts represents a 12% year-on-year (YoY) increase from a revised figure of 50 alerts in 2023, but it was a massive 65% jump on the 34 alerts noted in Q4 2023.

When breaking the alerts down by region, 41% came from Asia, with Turkey representing the highest number of alerts per country with eight. This is a major increase for the country YoY, as in Q1 2023, there was only one alert (tennis).

North America and South America had the joint second-most alerts in the opening quarter, 10 each, accounting for 36% of total alerts.

In Europe, there was a dramatic decrease in alerts compared to Q1 2023, from 24 to four.

Commenting on the data, Khalid Ali, CEO of the IBIA, said: “The first quarter saw an increase in reported alerts highlighting the ongoing challenge our members, sports and regulatory authorities face from corrupt activity, with football and Asia dominating our Q1 report.

“IBIA’s alerts are supported by detailed global customer account data only available to IBIA and its membership, which continues to grow, widening our world-leading market coverage.

“That account data provides evidentiary information that is vital for advancing investigations and imposing sanctions. IBIA is committed to continuing to work closely with stakeholders and to providing this important evidence base.”

The IBIA’s suspicious betting data was published alongside a ‘Focus on Canada’ release that found a 92% channelisation rate in Ontario.

The body estimates lost tax to offshore operators to be $33m between 2024 and 2028.

Excluding Ontario, Canada’s channelisation rate was much lower at 11% with estimated lost tax to offshore operators at $395m between 2024 and 2028.

The body expects channelisation in Ontario to be 97% by 2028, but believes the rest of Canada’s rate will only increase to 13% if the current monopoly regulatory position remains.
