Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for placing 50 bets at the start of the 2023-24 season.

Tonali is currently serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting regulations while with his former club AC Milan.

Following an investigation conducted by the Italian Football Association (FIGC), the Italian midfielder’s lawyers reached an agreement that would see Tonali spend eight months in therapy, including anti-gambling activities.

However, according to the FA’s brief statement, the Italian midfielder “breached FA Rule E8 by placing 50 bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023”.

The latter date coincides with the player being investigated by Italian police, alongside Aston Villa’s Nicolò Zaniolo, while the pair were on international duty – Zaniolo faced no disciplinary action.

In a statement, Newcastle said they acknowledged a misconduct charge and that the player “continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club’s full support”.

The club added: “Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

Tonali’s agent Giuseppi Riso stated last October that the player was dealing with a gambling addiction.

The current suspension is the longest ban issued to a Premier League player for betting offences since former midfielder Joey Barton was handed an 18 month ban in April 2017. He was found to have placed 1,260 bets on football matches between 2006 and 2013.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney served an eight-month ban in March 2023 after being charged with 262 breaches dating between 25 February 2017 and 23 January 2021 – he returned in January.
