Having spent the past few years optimising the methodology that underpins its data collection methods, the Gambling Survey for Great Britain (GSGB) today launched the Wave 1 results of its new study which showed 48% of respondents had gambled in the past four weeks.

Using information collected from approximately 4,800 respondents aged 18 or over between July and November 2023, the headline finding of the Wave 1 data was that almost half of the survey’s respondents (48%) said they’d gambled within the preceding four weeks of answering the survey.

Unlike previous questionnaires issued in the UK, the GSGB survey made a key point of distinguishing between respondents who had only bought tickets for the National Lottery and other similar draws and those who had participated in another form of gambling, with results excluding lottery participation showing roughly one-in-three (27%) had bet during the specified timeframe.

With 16 examples of gambling activity listed in the survey – as opposed to the two featured in its previous Health Survey – the numbers went on to show that without factoring in lottery, there was an almost even split between online and in-person gambling (16% and 18%, respectively) – with many of the past-four-weeks gamblers also indicating that they regularly did a mixture of the two.

Respondents said the most popular reason why they gambled was to win big money (86%) or because it was fun (70%).

Speaking on the results of the GSGB survey, Gambling Commission director of research and statistics, Ben Haden, wrote on the organisation’s blog: “After several years of development, we are delighted we have reached this point as we strive for better evidence to inform better decisions which will lead to better regulation.

“We are now confident that we have an independently recognised robust methodology that will help us to track trends in gambling behaviour in the years to come. The GSGB provides a consistent and frequent way of collecting data among adults in Great Britain and will provide regular data outputs in order to help us understand changes in gambling behaviour among the population and among sub-population groups.”

Going forward, the results of the GSGB survey will be published four times a year based on the 5,000-odd responses collected in each wave. This data will then be amalgamated into one large overview, with this year’s annual report set to be published in July.
